The problems we see with do-it-yourself bed liners thus far have been
durability related issues regarding color fastness, fading and also
adhesion to the previously painted bed surface being coated.
Most D-I-Y bed liner products on the market are not UV stable which
means they will prematurely fade and turn chalky looking and gray. This
deficiency is due to the formulation of the failing products and the
polymer components not being designed for direct UV exposure. It's kind
of a shortcut to making something that suffices for a recommended end
use.
The adhesion problems we see are typical for this kind of application
and the average do-it-yourselfer is not fully aware of how important a
really good sanding is to promote adhesion. The bed of a pick-up truck
has the same factory finish as the rest of the truck along with a coat
or three of wax. Sorry but paint just doesn't stick well to wax. Many
vehicle owners are leery of the sanding process and they tend to shy
away from putting elbow grease into the task. This is the mistake that
causes most of the failures we see or hear about. The recommended
solvent wiping also does not remove all the wax buildup and if you sand
like you’re feather dusting you’re pretty close to leaving bed liner
shards flying through the air as you drive.
This is where the MAGNALINER™ 3 Coat Kit concept begins. Most D-I-Y bed
liners are formulated from polymers that just don't have great adhesion
as a stand alone product. Combine this with inadequate surface prep and
you have a perfect recipe for failure. By incorporating a proven
automotive primer that has been reformulated for roller application, the
bed liner really gets a chance to stick. Since MAGNALINER™ is also
formulated from aliphatic (UV stable) polyurethanes, the finish stays
looking black and bright rather than dull, chalky and gray. So as a 3
coat system, MAGNALINER™ really steps up to the plate and solves all the
major issues in the do-it-yourself bed liner category. The kit costs a
little more than others but with all the comments out there about
recoating and guys that say they understand where they went wrong but
heck "I'll just go get another gallon!" Why waste time and extra money? |
